JANUARY 1, 2017
RICHIE, CHRISLYNN, AND THE CHILDREN RETURNED HOME ON THE 1ST AND SHORTLY AFTER, WE DROVE TO SLC FOR DICK'S LAST CYCLE. WHEN THE WEATHER IS BAD OR WHEN DICK'S APPOINTMENTS START SO EARLY, WE PREFER TO LEAVE THE NIGHT BEFORE. GISELLE MET US IN BRIGHAM FOR DINNER AND A BIG HUG.
I AM SO GLAD WE ARRIVED THE NIGHT BEFORE BECAUSE WE WOKE UP TO A LOT OF SNOW.
JANUARY 2ND
After we received the great news last visit, Dick decided to do one more cycle. 2 cycles ago, he was thinking that there was no way that he could even do one more. With the good news of no tumors seen on the CT Scan, he found strength to do one more.
He was worried that a tumor might be hiding.
We love this nurse! She is so knowledgeable.
Dick shared with her some concerns that he's been experiencing. After he visited with her and the Physician's Assistant, they thought it would be best for Dick to visit with the social worker. Dick expressed to them that he was feeling a lot of guilt for beating cancer. He told them that he felt bad for all the other patients that have passed on with his same cancer and also different cancers. He's been feeling like why him and not the others. Apparently so many patients feel this way. They call it survivor's remorse. The social worker told him that he has been fighting a huge battle for so long and all of a sudden that battle is over. She said there are different stages patients go through like anger, denial, depression, and bargaining before they experience the acceptance stage. Dick has been so positive throughout all of this journey that he never experienced those stages. He never was angry about it. In a way, him staying positive helped him survive what not everyone can but also, he skipped all the other important stages that help him deal with the final outcome. She thanked him for being so kind to all of the nurses throughout his cancer journey and for always treating everyone with so much respect. She encouraged him to go to a support group and to talk to patients that are going through cancer and chemo. She gave him so many wonderful ideas but especially explained to him why he was feeling that way.
I was so glad I could listen to what the social worker had to say because it helped me understand him better.
SLC has lots of snow!
JANUARY 3RD
Happy Birthday sweetheart!
I took him upstairs for dinner so that he wouldn't be stuck in his hospital room.
JANUARY 4TH
I got this scarf from Dick for Valentine's Day.
JANUARY 5TH
It was crazy slick coming up the hill for his last appointment with the Cardiologist. The cardiologist told us that Dick's echo looked great. The heart valves looked good and it was pumping great. He felt good that the chemo didn't hurt his heart.
GREAT WORKS ARE PERFORMED NOT BY STRENGTH BUT BY PERSEVERANCE.
