One of my favorite websites is, "Home Making Cottage." I read about an evening ritual that a family started and the mother hopes it lasts for years in her family. I changed it a little. If it is our job as mothers to allow less media in our houses, less distraction, less activity that draws our children away from our home.................well, I better get busy. I've been thinking I need to give our two children more of my time (uninterrupted). I made a new schedule for us that I hope our family sticks to forever. We've been pretty successful because we were kind of doing alot of the things on my schedule. We just need to stick to it closer and I added a few things. This is what our schedule consists of:
6:00am....Wake up
Make our own bed
Straighten up our own rooms
Personal prayers
Aubrey soaks her retainer before Anson showers
Anson showers and uses bathroom (shaving and all those things he does)
Aubrey gets dressed while Anson uses their bathroom
Aubrey uses bathroom after Anson (don't forget your retainer)
Family prayer before we go downstairs
Breakfast
Leave by 7:50am
4:00pm...Homework
5:00pm...Free time (No TV)
6:00pm...Dinner
7:00pm...Our new ritual! Since dad loves puzzles, I decided I'd work our scripture study into puzzle time. The first half hour, we take turns reading scriptures while the rest of us work on the puzzle. The second half hour, we work on the puzzle while we just visit and talk about our day. The kids just love it. Aubrey said today, "Mom, I pay more attention to the scriptures this way." We don't answer the phone or the door. It is our time with the children.
8:00pm...Family prayer
8:10pm...Aubrey showers while Anson shoots baskets.
8:30pm...Reading
9:00pm...Lights go out
I feel so good doing this. They are my responsibility. I have to remember to make home a little bit of heaven. A place where they can leave all the confusion and wickedness outside the door.
After they go to bed, I feel like I gave them my unconditional time and I didn't let the TV babysit them. I hope I can be dedicated enough to do this while we have them here at home. I also hope we keep our evening ritual for years to come. Maybe they can make it a tradition and do that with their children. Dick is such a wonderful support and he gets to work on his puzzles.
